Camping today is so much more than just pitching up a tent and carrying along a few supplies. Go into any of the many camping stores available today and you'll be bamboozled by the sheer number of camping options on offer. From remote controlled awnings for mobile homes to tents that pop up in seconds, it can be hard to work out what you need when you first start out. The good news is that there are just a few essentials you can get by with, and all of these items are available from local camping stores.
1. A good quality tent
This goes without saying, but it's the most important item on the list for a reason. Your tent is going to be the one thing that gives you shelter from the elements, that allows you to keep your belongings safe and gives you somewhere comfortable to sleep at night. Work out how many people you need your tent to fit, where you are going to use your tent and how much kit you need to pack into it. If you can find a tent that you can stand up in, that will make things so much easier when you need to get dressed or need to attend to the call of nature in the middle of the night.
2. The best sleeping bag you can afford
Even if you plan to camp in the middle of summer, the nights can get quite chilly. Look for a sleeping bag that matches the time of year you will be camping and which gives you cover for your entire body, including your head. An inflatable mattress will give you extra support and comfort if you are staying on hard ground.
3. Light your way
It's very likely to be extremely dark and even pitch black where you are camping. Unless you are blessed with night vision and a very brave disposition, you'll need suitable lighting for when you are inside and outside of your tent. A good quality lantern will ensure your pathway is lit when you need to venture out of your tent at night, and a few handheld and hanging lights inside your tent will ensure you have enough light to read or hunt things down when you need them.
4. Good quality cooking equipment
There's nothing like cooking and eating in the great outdoors, so make obtaining good quality catering equipment a top priority. You'll find many variations available in local camping stores. When it comes to cooking, you can choose to either get your own fire going, or cook on a gas stove. Some good pans and a plastic bowl for washing the dishes and you're good to go!
Whenever and wherever you go camping, it's reassuring to know that most of the equipment and essentials you'll need can be found in your nearest camping stores. You'll also be able to pick up tips and advice at these stores that will ensure you have a safe and enjoyable adventure.Share

Welcome to my great new camping blog. My name is Dale and my biggest passion in life is camping. I have always been an outdoors kid. I grew up in the Outback in the middle of nowhere. When I wasn't in school, I would be out in the countryside with my granddad. He was an old pro and he taught me everything he knew about setting up a tent, cooking on a campfire and finding your way using nothing but the sun and stars. He died last year, so I decided to start a blog so I could pass on everything he taught me to the rest of the world.
